Protecting the Path, Supporting the People

The African elephant is the largest land animal on earth, but today, these gentle giants are at risk due to poaching. At Ol Pejeta, we provide a safe haven for them, but keeping them safe in a changing world takes constant work and new ideas.

Elephants live in close-knit families led by a matriarch. Because they travel long distances to find food and water, Ol Pejeta doesn’t have a permanent herd. Instead, our landscape is a refuge for up to 300 elephants at any given time as they move through the Laikipia region.

Right now, we are celebrating a major success: an elephant baby boom. These elephants and their new calves are the architects of our land, but as they grow, they need our protection.

To help them roam freely, we’ve built special wildlife corridors into our fences – these gaps allow elephants and other animals to move safely between Ol Pejeta and the surrounding area, while still keeping our rhinos secure inside.

Our job is to make sure this Giant’s Journey is safe for both the elephants and our human neighbours. From March 30th to April 12th, we are raising $15,500 to fund the teams that make this possible.
