HELP US SAVE THE NORTHERN WHITE RHINOS

There are just three northern white rhinos left in the world – and they live on Ol Pejeta Conservancy. In 2009, they were brought over from Dvur Králové Zoo in the Czech Republic, in the hope that a more natural environment might stimulate their breeding capabilities. Unfortunately, that never happened.

So it falls to us to try other methods that will save these gentle giants. Scientists and conservationists from all corners of the globe have met, discussed and formed a strategy we think might work – and just in time. It involves hundreds of people working together over the course of about five years - from laboratories in Switzerland to rhino parks in South Africa - and of course, the endangered species enclosure within our own conservancy here in Kenya.

The ART (assisted reproduction techniques) roadmap that was drawn out estimates a total cost of about $9m, and includes extremely cutting edge scientific techniques as well as essential preparations on the ground from our end. IVF (in vitro fertilization) has never yet been tried on rhinos, and is extremely complicated. The entire process requires everyone to play their role with painstaking care and attention; it’s only through that kind of cohesion that we can expect to succeed.

The responsibility for raising the money necessary for our side of the IVF process falls to us, and we are doing all that we can to help gather the funds. From charity events to art auctions, holiday raffles and of course, a large chunk of the profits from the conservancy’s tourism and livestock revenues.

Now, we’re turning to you. There are billions of people in the world, and only three of these beautiful creatures. Even one dollar could make a difference – and we need your help.

Donate now and become a part of the community dedicated to keeping northern white rhinos from disappearing off our planet entirely.
